We enter a banquet hall with extravagant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Each table has beautiful, over-the-top floral centerpieces and a complimentary crystal glass of champagne in front of every seat.

“I didn’t know it was this fancy,” I whisper to Hunter.

Our arms are linked together and he pulls me in tighter. “Don’t worry, we don’t have to stay for too long. I know it’s not your thing.”

Definitely not my thing. I couldn’t even deal with being at my prom the entire time, so Hunter and I ended up hanging out at a local park while I was in my gown and he was in his tux.

“What’s this dinner for anyway?”

“It’s a special fiftieth anniversary.”

“Fiftieth anniversary of what? The fraternity?”

“No. I zoned out when they were talking about it so I actually don’t have a clue. I felt too stupid to ask anyone, so I’ve just been pretending to know what the fuck everyone’s been talking about for the past few weeks.” A giggle slips out and he chuckles with me. “Let’s get a drink and act as if we know what’s going on.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

My brain has gotten so used to how I’m supposed to act with Hunter out in public, that it’s become second nature to neglect every sane thought I have while we’re together. And when he’s being nice, it’s even easier.

We spend the hour schmoozing and sipping on expensive drinks. Technically, Hunter does the schmoozing, I stand there and smile. I hate talking to random people and having surface conversation, so I’m grateful the alcohol is loosening up my nerves.

“This is Ellie,” Hunter introduces me to yet another alumnus, only thankfully this man doesn’t feel the need to stare at my dress and give Hunter a nod of approval.

“Nice to meet you, Ellie, I’m Hank.” He shakes my hand and we talk for a bit about the university and Hank’s good ole days in the fraternity.

“What are you studying, Ellie?” Hank asks.

“I’m a philosophy major.”

His eyebrow rises. “A philosophy major?”

I nod, unsure of his reaction.

“Are you liking it?” he inquires.

“I absolutely love it,” I gush. “I even spent the summer abroad studying philosophy.”

“Don’t be modest, Ellie,” Hunter interjects, then speaks to Hank. “My girl got a full scholarship to the abroad program in France and is at the top of her class.” My cheeks redden at the bragging Hunter is doing on my behalf.

“Is that so?” Hank glances at me and I nod again. “Well, if that’s the case, I might have an interesting internship opportunity for you starting in the fall. My company will be taking over a local nonprofit soon and we’ll be looking to hire an intern to help with the ethics and policies. There’ll be a lot of writing and potential opportunities for presentations, which I can guarantee will look wonderful on your resume.” He reaches into his jacket pocket. “Here’s my card. Reach out by the end of the semester if you’re interested and we can set up an interview.”

I let out a small gasp as I take the card from him.
